Treehouse

by Matt Epp

/

about

Dry oak leaves crunching underfoot is the sound that leads us into the song, where a dreamy tree-house is being lovingly built by hand. Rainbow trout, errant arrows, and driftwood furniture playfully furnish the verses, while the chorus touches on a world “upside-down” and the need for a “hide-away” to live out our remaining days.

“I recently got a little space in the bush up north that has a huge mother tree on it. I will build a small cabin / treehouse there for my daughter and I. The world is changing rapidly; a little off-grid home in the bush seems the most practical way to provide shelter and food security for her. This song is about a childhood dream come true, for me, and also about supporting my daughter’s childhood and well-being into an uncertain future.” -Matt

lyrics

I’m building you a treehouse in the forest
I’m filling it with all your favourite things

There’s a rainbow trout swimming in the river
Beneath the waterfalls where we will bathe

Oh I hope that you enjoy our little hideaway
Maybe you will even want to stay
I put a lot of love into this little place

And when your world turns inside out darlin'
You be the melody, I will sing your harmony
Together we will live out all our days
In our treehouse

I made a table out of seashells
Driftwood is the frame beneath the bed

There’s an arrow in the door, but it’s not pointing anymore
No that was just a lousy shot I made
